Basics of Cat Introductions

It’s such an exciting time when you’re bringing a new kitten or cat home for the first time. You might have an image in your head: you enter holding a new bundle of fur, your existing cat, starved for feline company, leaps in joy, they proceed to play or cuddle. Unfortunately, this is extremely unlikely to happen.

Cats are very territorial, and it’s not always easy for them to welcome a new “intruder” in the house. As a responsible pet parent, you have to manage the process of introductions slowly and carefully.

No matter what some Facebook strangers might say, DO NOT just let the newcomer out of the carrier the moment they arrive, hoping that her and the existing cat will “work it out”. Chances are that someone will lose an eye or end up spending months hiding on top of the fridge. Even if not – it’s not fair to put your cats under this level of stress.

It is YOU who decided to get another cat, and so it is YOUR responsibility to manage the process and make sure everyone is happy.

There is some fantastic advice online on how to introduce cats properly, so I am not going to reinvent the wheel here. Some of the highly recommended sources are:

Cat relationships can be tricky and not always smooth. After all, we (humans) also fall out with friends sometimes, or have an occasional argument. That’s why it’s important to give your feline friends the best start possible.

The process might take anywhere from a few hours (especially in a case of kittens), to a few weeks (in case of older cats that are set in their ways).

You have to be patient – do not rush it! Your cats will thank you, as will your own sanity, because there’s nothing worse than having to deal with an ongoing conflict between two creatures you love.

In case of issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to a certified cat behaviourist (ideally, sooner rather than later!), who will be able to visit your home, observe the situation, and give personalised advice.

Good luck!
